The flu can make you feel miserable. There are many symptoms associated with the flu that can make getting through the day difficult. These symptoms include:
- A fever of 100 or higher
- Extreme fatigue
- Muscle and joint pain
- A hacking cough
- A stuffy or a runny nose
- A sore throat
Your best defense against getting the flu and spreading it to others is to be vaccinated. According to the Center For Disease Control, this year’s flu vaccine is only 10 percent effective. This means that even if you were vaccinated, there is no guarantee that you won’t get sick.
Some people are lucky enough to be able to stay home from work while they are recovering from the flu. There are others who have jobs where they don’t have the luxury of staying home for up to a week to recover. If you have one of these jobs, there are certain supplies that you should keep at your desk to make your workday easier.
If you are suffering from the flu, you are going to need tissues at your desk. Since you will likely need to blow your nose several times throughout the day, you should buy tissues that have lotion in them. The lotion in the tissues will keep your nose from becoming red and raw.
It is a good idea to keep Tylenol at your desk if you are sick. Not only will the Tylenol keep your fever down, it will also help with the muscle and joint pain. Taking Tylenol every few hours will make the workday more bearable.
Cough Medicine or Cough Drops
Many people who suffer from the flu experience a cough that can make it difficult to talk to clients, get through a phone call, and it can be disturbing to people working nearby. To keep this from happening, you should keep cough syrup or cough drops at your desk. Each of these products will quiet your cough, making it easier to get through the day.
Nasal Spray or Decongestant
If you have a stuffy nose or a runny nose, it can make it difficult to concentrate when you are at work. Fortunately, there are over the counter medications that can make breathing much easier. If you are going to go with an oral decongestant, make sure that the one that you choose doesn’t have an antihistamine in it. Antihistamines make you tired, therefore, these medications aren’t the best choice if you are going to be at work all day. Nasal sprays are a great option if you want to experience the effects of the medication instantly. Also, there are no antihistamines in the nasal spray.
When you are suffering from the flu, it is important that you stay hydrated. When you go to the office, you should bring a bottle of water or a bottle of fruit juice with you. The more hydrated you are, the better you will feel.
If you are going to work with the flu, it is your responsibility to keep from spreading it to your coworkers. The best way to do this is to keep your hands clean and free of germs. You should keep a bottle of hand sanitizer at your desk. This will allow you to wash your hands regularly without needing to use the sink in the bathroom several times a day.
If you don’t have the luxury of staying in bed when you are sick, the second best thing is bringing the necessary supplies to the office. The necessary supplies will help you get through the day.
