This is not the usual flu you know that is associated with virus and fever. It’s only called stomach flu while, in fact, it’s a type of stomachache.
What Is Stomach Flu?
Stomach flu also known as gastroenteritis is a disease caused by rotavirus common during the winter. It’s also caused by echovirus and adenovirus, which are common during spring and summer. These viruses may come from food that is not properly prepared. Poor hygiene is also a culprit when these viruses enter the stomach, they immediately cause severe stomach pain that last long if not treated.
Symptoms of Stomach Flu
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Symptoms usually last just a day or two, but occasionally they may persist as long as 10 days.” Therefore, you should observe the first two days. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor. To guide you, here are some common symptoms of stomach flu:

- Occasional Headache and muscle ache
- Vomiting, Nausea, or Both

Who Can Suffer from Stomach Flu?
Anyone can suffer from the stomach flu, but this is more common to children as their digestive system is not yet as efficient as that of adults. Nonetheless, everyone should prevent this type of disease as it can attack anyone.
How to Treat Stomach Flu
There are many ways to survive a stomach flu. Here they are:
Drink the Right Fluids
People who are dehydrated are prone to stomach flu. This is because our excess body fluid works to detoxify our stomach. The excess fluid is excreted in the feces and urine. If our body is dehydrated, we do not release excess fluid that carries toxins from stomach. Such toxins are then preserved in the inside. Later, they will develop and attack. Drinking lots of fluids is recommended.
However, not all types of fluids are good. The most recommended fluid is clear water. You can also have some sports drinks or energy drinks as they contain lots of electrolytes. You will need a lot of fluid not only to prevent stomach flu but also to replace the loss fluid as a result of diarrhea. Do not drink caffeinated drinks, soda, black tea, and alcoholic beverages.
Eat the Right Food
Eat lots of food that is rich in carbohydrates to replace the loss nutrients. This will also give you more energy to accelerate your recovery. Moreover, such food is easy to digest, so you can eat this type of food even while experiencing the symptoms. The recommended foods are:
- Mashed Potato
Avoid spicy food, oily and greasy food such as fried meat, and dairy food. You should also not eat so much fiber. You will only need fiber if your bowel movement is not loose, but don’t eat fiber-rich food when you have diarrhea.
Avoid self-medications. Stomach pain is not always treated with pain relievers such as mefenamic acid as it can actually severe it. There are some over-the-counter medicines such as antacids that you can take. For diarrhea, there are also over-the-counter medicines you can buy to cure it such as loperamide.
Our body needs rest. At least eight hours of sleep every night will help a lot. In addition, you need to stay home while the symptoms are still present. Stress augments the symptoms, so it’s recommended you refrain from doing heavy tasks during the treatment.
