Shortening Severity and Duration

These herbal remedies will reduce the severity of your flu symptoms as well as speed your recovery.

Garlic

Garlic is a natural antibiotic, anti-fungal, and antiviral because it contains the compound allicin. Since the flu is a viral infection, garlic can be effective at treating the actual flu virus instead of just the symptoms. It is most effective when it is eaten in raw form. You can add it to a teaspoon of honey or olive oil to make it more palatable or purchase a garlic supplement.

Onion

Garlic is a member of the onion family, and onions also have antibacterial and antiviral action. The compounds in onions aren’t as strong as those in garlic, but they can be used to make an effective cough syrup that also helps boost your immune system. Finely chop an onion and place it in a small jar with a lid. Cover the onion completely with sugar. The sugar will draw out the active compounds in the onion and turn to a liquid. Let it sit for 24 hours, and then you can take a teaspoon as needed for cough. This remedy is gentler and more palatable than garlic, making it suitable for children.

Treating Symptoms

These methods will help treat your symptoms and make being sick with the flu easier to bear.

Mint and Catnip

Bring a cup of water to a boil and add a few teaspoons of mint and catnip. Breathe the steam in while the tea cools. If your nose is congested, try to inhale through your nose. If your chest is congested, inhale through your mouth. Once the tea has cooled down enough, strain and drink it. This combination of herbs is an excellent decongestant that will have you breathing easier and feeling better as a result. This remedy is safe and gentle for children as well as adults.

Warm Baths

The flu often comes along with body aches. Baths with Epson salts and ginger powder can help reduce body aches and pains. You can also add in some menthol crystals to ease congestion.

Ginger

Ginger is a potent anti-inflammatory, anti nausea, and a decongestant. It can help relieve your pain and treat any nausea and congestion that you are suffering from as well. You can purchase fresh ginger root, ginger tea bags, or powdered ginger and brew them into a tea.

Willow Bark

Willow bark was used to create aspirin, and they are similar in their chemical make up. Willow bark is known for being an effective pain reliever and fever reducer. It also has immune boosting and antioxidant compounds including polyphenols and antioxidants, which can be helpful in helping your body fight off the flu.

These natural flu remedies will have you feeling better faster, and they are much healthier than traditional medicine options. Treating the symptoms of the flu along with the flu virus is the best way to get better as quickly as possible without feeling unduly miserable.
