The flu virus can strike at the worse time, like before a big event or a vacation. There is no fast cure for the flu, and if you didn’t get a flu vaccine, symptoms can linger for one or two weeks. You can always see your doctor and ask about antiviral medications, which help shorten the duration of your flu. But if you don’t have the energy or desire to sit in a doctor’s office, there are practical tips to help remedy your symptoms – fast.
1. Increase your fluid intake. The more water you drink, the better. Dehydration and mucus are common problems with the flu. Keep a bottle of water next to your bed and occasionally sip from the bottle. Liquids help loosen mucus in your throat, chest and nose.
2. Take a time out. Yes, you’re busy and have a lot of responsibilities. But if you don’t chill and rest with the flu, the virus can linger longer than two weeks or turn into pneumonia. Spend a few days in bed and you’ll feel better.
3. Take medication around the clock. Flu medications will not cure the flu, but they can ease symptoms and help you recover faster. Medications include ingredients to reduce fevers, stop pain and lessen coughing.
