How to Avoid the Flu

As the weather becomes colder, winter isn’t the only season coming our way. In addition, the flu season is upon us, and being able to avoid catching the flu and spreading it throughout your community can make your life and the lives of those around you healthier and more enjoyable.  There are simple steps you can take to limit the exposure of your family and community and most are common sense that anyone can follow to reduce the spread of the flu.

Be proactive- Get a flu vaccine

One of the most effective practices is to get an annual flu vaccine. There are many different locations that the flu vaccine is offered at little cost and the odds of the flu vaccine being offered nearby in your neighborhood is actually fairly high.  Children and the elderly are most susceptible to the flu, and therefore need the vaccine the most.

This shot is more vital to the very young and the very old but will allow those groups that are high risk to make it through the winter season without contracting a potentially deadly flu virus.  Some government websites urge all people older than six months to get a flu vaccine. Yet it is recommended that everyone obtains the flu vaccine to ensure they remain healthy during this harsh season of sickness.

React to symptom quickly via a flu test kit

If you think you are showing flu related symptoms, then take advantage of a flu test kit to find out what your symptoms are trying to tell you.  Flu test kits are readily available at most drug stores and provide accurate readings that not only inform you if you have the flu, but also what type of flu you are suffering from.  This test can be completed quickly, often within a span of 15 minutes.  That way if a person has the flu, the appropriate treatment can begin immediately.

Eat right and exercise

As with almost every facet of healthy living, when you take the time to take care of your body, a person is much less susceptible to the flu.   Simple things, such as, getting plenty of rest, eating a healthy well-balanced diet and getting regular exercise can help ward off the flu virus in many cases.

Practice good personal hygiene

There are simple preventive practices we can all take, such as regularly washing our hands and using anti-bacterial lotion.  Also you should avoid rubbing your eyes or having your hands come in direct contact with your mouth or nose.   These practices should become a part of your everyday routine, as well as during the heightened flu season.

Avoiding the flu should be something that you are actively practicing annually, but particularly as the colder flu months approach.  For some people, it can mean the difference between being sick for days and for others it can mean the difference between life and death.  Remember that getting a flu vaccine is the simplest and most effective method to assist in avoiding the flu.
