Types of influenza
Influenza is of three types
- Seasonal flu
- Avian flu
- Pandemic flu
Though caused by virus from the same family, these types of flu present different types of threats
This virus often changes from winter to winter. Individuals tend to catch flu only once a year during the cold season. To ensure the best treatment and attention, it is best that the flu is diagnosed accurately. The symptoms take about 1-4 days to develop after exposure. On the onset of the disease, you will feel a headache and arisen temperature and the general feeling of ill health.
What should you do if you catch the flu?
If you have arisen temperature, you could have the flu and may need to seek medical attention. It would be particularly important if:
- You generally feel unwell
- You usually have a yearly flu vaccine since you’re 65 or more or have a condition like a lung, heart or kidney disease.
Also, it is crucial to seek medical attention if you develop complications.
Avian flu, otherwise known as bird flu, is a type of flu which generally affects domestic and wild birds. Avian flu is of different types including a form of the disease caused by HN1 virus. The virus has serious effects in poultry though ducks and other birds do not experience a serious problem. If you have contacts with an infected poultry, you will contract the disease and what follows is a serious illness. This, though, happens in a small number of people. Until now, there is no evidence of the spread of this disease from one individual to another. This means that the illness has not adapted properly to affecting humans.
This type of influenza has an entirely different effect from the rest of the viruses. It is caused by the coming up of a flu virus that is distinct from the strains around. It spreads rapidly among individuals and can cause severe illnesses in people.
Treatment for pandemic flu
Antivirals can be used to treat and control influenza. They are shown to be handy in the treatment of ordinary flu, and thus it is most likely that a patient with a pandemic virus will respond well to the drug. The drug will subdue the symptoms and reduce the time you’ll take feeling unwell.
